My idea of original art in the beginning of this unit is similar to but less defined than my definition of original art now. At the beginning of this unit i thought original art was simply coming up with a new idea or changing an old idea. Now at the end of the Artists Steal unit my definition of original art is taking an old concept, idea, or another artists work and changing it it some way, shape, or form possibly by combining it with something else, making it abstract, using a new medium, etc. to make it new, different, and/or yours. We were taught a quote "Good artists copy, great artists steal" by Picasso. This means that to just copy another artist work, to replicate it, doesn't make it original but to steal another's work, to take it and change it, is to make it original. In conclusion original art means to take an idea and make it different from the way its been used before.
Character Remix Project- In this project took two of my favorite animated movies/TV shows and combined them. I took a scene from the movie My Neighbor Totoro and replaced the characters in the scene with the two main characters from Lilo and Stitch. I had the replacement characters doing the same actions as the original ones and also made them the same size. I layered water color for the background and used colored pencil for the characters. Using burnishing i was able to get the characters to the correct color and shade.
Combination Project- In this project we had to combine two objects. It took me a while to get inspiration buy i finally decided on having the feathers of a peacock morph into dandelion seeds as they fell. Again I used burnishing and layering to get the colors as realistic as possible. By having the feathers slowing change into floating dandelion seeds i combined the objects, they become each other.
Subject Steal Final Project- In my final project i picked the theme of nature from which to steal. This theme is evident in my art because it depicts a colorful bird in flight over a colorful background. The background is meant to represent the diverse colors of the forest and the bird has the coloring of a species of parrot. Both of these things exist within nature. For this project i melted a variety of softer colored crayons to get the blended splashes of color. I drew the bird in ink and first filled in in with glitter glue and later went over it in acrylic paint thinned by water.
